🗓️ Program Details
Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2026
Time: 15:00 - 16:00
Language: English
Admission: Free
📖 About the Program
In this artist talk and discussion, Marek Majewski will present his photobook Somnium and talk about the ideas and process behind the work. The project explores how images can evoke memories, dreams, and emotional states through sequencing and the physical form of the book. Marek will share how the project developed over time, from wandering and photographing to editing and building the rhythm of the book. The session will also open into a discussion about photobooks, self-publishing, and the role of intuition and experimentation in a photographic practice.
🎤 About the Artist
Marek Majewski
Marek Majewski is a photographer whose work explores memory, atmosphere, and inner landscapes through a slow and hands-on approach to image making. His practice is deeply connected to artisanal and experimental processes, where images are not only captured but also transformed through physical manipulation and printing techniques. He is particularly interested in how photographs evolve through different stages, from the initial image to the final form within a book. Through this process, his work seeks to create quiet spaces that feel suspended between dream, memory, and imagination.

Time: 13:00 – 14:00
Language: English
Admission: Free
📖 About the Program
Join us for the photobook launch and artist talk for "Phantasma" by Alfred Ong, newly published by Ephemere. In this deeply personal session, Alfred and Ephemere publisher Anne Murayama will discuss the emotional and editorial journey of creating this book. Originally titled "Phantoms of Passing Light," the project evolved through their editing process to use the framework of the Nine Circles of Hell, mapping Alfred's visceral confrontation with childhood trauma, domestic violence, and the complicated weight of mourning an abusive father. This talk will explore how photography can serve as both a self-imposed sanctuary and a tool for profound liberation, transforming the flames of the past into a powerful visual testimony.
🎤 About the Artist
Alfred Ong
Alfred Ong is a Filipino photographer exploring the intersection of stillness and quiet environments. He captures lone figures and fleeting moments that slip past unnoticed, from late-night streets to brief daily pauses. For him, photography is a tool for navigating difficult emotions, transforming internal heaviness into beauty. Through a minimalist lens, he finds clarity in ordinary spaces, creating an invitation to slow down and experience the introspective calm that emerges when we allow silence to speak

🗓️ Program Details
Date: Sunday, May 17, 2026
Time: 13:00 - 14:00
Language: Japanese

📖 About the Program
"Is a newspaper just paper for delivering news?" Kyoto Shimbun Printing redefines the "newspaper" as a platform for artistic expression. This program explores the company's challenge of liberating traditional printing technology as a "place for expression" and providing a new platform.
🎤 About the Company
Kyoto Shimbun Printing
Having observed five eras in the historic city of Kyoto, our newspaper printing has played a part in photojournalism, constantly striving to improve the freshness, accuracy, and precision of information to convey the truth to readers. How far can the art of photography be expressed through newspaper printing, which has traditionally conveyed facts? Under the banner of "Redefining Newspaper Printing," they provide a new art platform called "Rinten."

Rinzai — Kousuke Shimasaki: Photobook Launch and Artist Talks
🗓️ Program Details
Date: Saturday, April 25, 2026
Time: Part 1: 15:00~ Author’s Talk
Time: Part 2: 18:00~ Designer’s Talk
Language: Japanese (with English supplementary information as needed)
Admission: Free
📖 About the Program
This special program celebrates the launch of Kousuke Shimasaki's new photobook, Rinzai. Rather than separate presentations, this session will be a dynamic cross-talk discussion featuring the artist, the book's designer (Yuri Inoue), and the publisher (Anne Murayama).
Rinzai is an attempt to explore the unseen presence of life and spirit in nature, sparked by a deeply personal experience of loss. In this talk, Shimasaki will share the ideological background and photographic process behind the work. Joining him, Inoue and Murayama will break down how those concepts were translated into physical form—discussing everything from paper choices and binding to typography and the rhythm of white space.
Attendees will get a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the collaborative journey of independent photobook making.
🎤 About the Artists
Kousuke Shimasaki (Rinzai’s Author)
Born 1997 in Kochi Prefecture, a photographer based in Tokyo and Kochi. Focusing on the "cycle of immaterial entities," he attempts to express the flow of time, space, and spirit—things not directly visible—through photography. His experience of finding a single rose blooming on the balcony on the day his beloved dog died sparked a strong interest in animistic thought. Since then, he has created works that evoke a sense of reverence for nature, the preciousness of life, and its transience.

Yuri Inoue(Rinzai’s Designer)
Born 1985 in Tokyo Prefecture, after gaining extensive experience in graphic design at a design firm, she became independent in 2019. She works as a freelance designer, primarily focusing on print media such as magazines, catalogs, and books. While mainly working on client projects, she has recently been actively involved in zine production, exhibitions, and event participation, expanding her scope of work. She met Anne Murayama of Ephemere at a zine event in Harajuku and has since been involved as a designer in several of her projects.

Ephemere Presents: ANTHOLOGY 2
Derived from the Greek word for "a gathering of flowers," ANTHOLOGY is a photography exhibition series produced by Ephemere.
Curated by Anne Murayama, this project gathers photographers from across the globe—distinct in style, genre, and geography—and weaves their individual narratives into a cohesive visual collection. Each volume is accompanied by a limited-edition printed publication, ensuring the collection endures beyond the gallery walls.
For ANTHOLOGY 2, nine photographers converge in Tokyo to explore the construction of the image itself. The exhibition arranges itself into three distinct visual threads: physically altering the photographic medium, redefining narratives through sequence and physical interaction, and capturing the emotional displacement of place. From experimental chemical treatments and forgotten historical printing methods to interactive photographic objects, this exhibition asks not just what we see, but how the image is made, felt, and remembered.

Expressing Zen Through Visual Media with Glen Snyder • Artist Talk at the Ephemere Photo Fest 2025
We're honored to welcome Zen priest and photographer Glen (Isshin) Snyder for an insightful talk as part of our Special Programs. Ordained as a Zen priest in Texas, Glen has spent over a decade living in Japan, where his photography explores the underbelly of Zen in everyday life, often challenging conventional views of "Zen qualities" in nature and art.
In his 90-minute discussion, "Expressing Zen Through Visual Media," Glen will highlight the profound influence of Zen in photographic art. He will draw on ancient Buddhist scriptures to discuss concepts such as the relationship between an image and the true nature of an object, and how light and darkness bring about experience.
The talk will be followed by a half-hour photo walk around the Shibuya area, and a 15-minute meditation session will be held at the beginning of the talk.
This talk is open to all, regardless of language ability or experience in either Zen or photography. It's an opportunity to explore the unique parallels between Zen meditation as a practice and photography as a practice, and to learn how to infuse your work with a deeper sense of presence and purpose.

Mai Nguyên Anh – The Patriot Playbook (4:57min)
Project Statement
This project traces Ho Chi Minh monuments amid controversies and state investments. Driven by curiosity about rising nationalism versus grassroots sentiments, I travelled across the country to capture moments, blending propaganda with personal encounters. The work maps an evolving political/cultural identity, but also reveals love for a country beyond ideology.

Project Statement
Giao Điểm was made in eight days in 2024, during a trip to Siem Reap with my father. He spent four days with me before leaving back to Vietnam for his work. A day later, my lover came to visit me without him knowing. The work explores my father's story, and the secrets within.

Sarah Isabelle Tan - Do you remember the colour of the sky that day (II) (5:01min)
Project Statement
Do you remember the colour of the sky that day (II) is an encounter with images composed of Super 8 footage and damaged negatives shot and collected over five years. Scratches, stains, and chemical traces reveal distortion rather than clarity, embracing fragments of memory suspended between visibility and loss. I narrate parts of imagined and real stories, mirroring my broader practice of exploring how presence delicately persists at thresholds of visibility, and is revealed in the act of holding, carrying, sustaining.
Artist Bio

Shwe Wutt Hmon - When The Curtain Falls (3:14min)
Project Statement
When The Curtain Falls is about finding and building connections between myself, photo studio spaces that I love so much, and the people who protect these memorable places, as a way to counter my fear that these photo studios will soon vanish in a not-so-distant-future.
